Dragon Boat Festival, meaning "upright sun" or Duanyang, "double five", is a Chinese festival that originated in southern China. It falls on the fifth day of May around the summer solstice and includes boat racing and zongzi.
Although there is much speculation surrounding the origin of the festival, the most famous one is that the day commemorates Qu Yuan, a patriotic Chinese poet and a beloved secretary of state who gave his life to the country. However, he was exiled by Emperor Huai for false charges, and after the next emperors surrendered to their opponents, Qu drowned himself in the Miluo River. Upon hearing of Qu's death, the villagers rowed along the river in search of his body, but to no avail. To prevent the fish from eating his body, they made zongzi, or glutinous rice balls, and threw them into the river. This later evolved into the Chinese tradition of eating zongzi and rowing dragon boats during festivals.
